Industrial Disease
You may have developed an industrial disease caused by exposure to harmful substances at work. It is your employer’s duty to take steps to ensure that your health does not suffer as a result of your job. They cannot ignore any complaints or concerns you may raise about the effect of your employment on your health.
Some of the most common types of industrial disease include:
- Industrial deafness caused by working in a very noisy environment.
- Repetitive strain injury caused by a regular task such as typing.
- Dermatitis caused by being in constant contact with an irritating substance at work.
- Vibration white finger caused as a result of using power tools at work.
- Asbestos related disease such as Mesothelioma which is caused as a result of exposure to asbestos dust usually at work.
Some industrial diseases may not become apparent for some years after your exposure to the harmful substance. In such cases, the three-year time limit for bringing a claim begins from the date you first knew of the disease.
Even if you are self-employed you may be able to claim compensation if, for example, you were working in an area that was someone else's safety responsibility.
If you have developed an industrial disease, then you could be entitled to make a claim for compensation.
